                                                      Heating (Furnaces):

How do you shop for the right furnace?  First, you need to decide what you want out of a new furnace.  Do you want to gear it towards efficiency, price, quality, etc?  These are a few things that you need to figure out before you dive right in.  Second, once that is determined then you will have to decide on how to build it.  Selecting a furnace is much like buying a new car, they start out as a base package and then you can load it up with options.  Basically there are two models of furnaces with each model having three lines to it.  There is an 80% model and a 90% model.

The first model is an
80% Efficiency model that means that for every ($) dollar that you pay for in gas you get .80 cents of the energy (take the efficiency rating and subtract it from a $ to see what you would save).  That is what you call the
Single Stage furnace.  For example:  let’s say that you have a 100,000 BTU gas furnace, every time the furnace calls for heat then it takes 100,000 BTU’s of gas to heat the house to the desired temperature
(pedal to the metal until it reaches the call for heat).

A
Two-Stage furnace, is more of a gas conservative piece of equipment.  It usually has efficiency ratings of 83% or higher and operates by using half of the BTU’s at the first call for heat.  Example: Take the 100,000 BTU furnace, the Two-Stage will fire 50,000 of the BTU’s at the first call for heat and if it does not reach that call in 10-15 minutes then the other stage (other 50,000 BTU’s) will fire giving you the full force of your furnace.  The next model is a

Variable Speed furnace.  This furnace has the same gas conserving option as the Two-Stage furnace except that it has an
ECM (Electronically Controlled Motor) motor (that when the fan is left on at the thermostat) that operates at a lower wattage than a light bulb.  It is designed to constantly run and provide a higher quality of airflow, steady temperatures throughout the household, and better air to breathe.  Typically the variable speed furnace rates at about 85% Efficiency with this model.

The
90% Model has the same technology on all three lines of furnaces with efficiency ratings from 90% to the applicable tax credit of 95% efficiency.  The difference between the two models is that they vary in price and construction.  The 90% model is equipped with a sealed burner box that allows for a cleaner burn of the gas and it extends the life of the heat exchanger.
The heat exchanger has a limited lifetime warranty vs. the 80% model typically has a 20 year heat exchanger warranty.  Also, the 90% model uses a different flue venting technique.
Running 1-2  PVC pipes up and to the outside of the home.
This allows for the furnace to pull fresh air from the outside
and exhaust the harmful gases all in one sweep.  For more

Air Handler/ Electric Furnace:

What is an Air Handler?  An air handler is a piece of equipment that is used for a/c only applications and/or has an application for an electric furnace.  It has an evaporator coil, a blower, and the cabinet to hold it all in.  It is a very simple piece of equipment.
When used as an a/c only application it is geared for adding air conditioning in an area that does not cool very well and/or is hard to get existing supply runs. Do you have a room or rooms in your house that do not get much airflow and are smoldering during the summertime.  Installing an air handler with a/c only is considered zoning your home.  It provides ample cooling throughout your home which will save you money because you will not have to continuously over work one system to make up for the heat upstairs.  How does it provide electric heating?

The electric furnace make up consists of the air handler with the installation of electric heat strips.  This provides the electric heating that rolls throughout the house.  It is often used with the combination of the Heat Pump.
The Heat Pump provides the heating for temperatures of 34 degrees and above and the electric heat strips provides the heating for below 34 degrees.  Now, electric heating is used more throughout the southern regions where it is not as cold during the winter. But, here in Kansas City I have installed a number of these systems.  There are two models of the Air Handler.  There is the standard air handler that has a single speed blower and there is a Variable Speed blower air handler.  It just depends on what you want your system to achieve.  Being efficiency, price, quality, etc.  Feel free to contact me for more information on this topic.
